Eye exams check more than your vision, they’re also key in assessing your overall eye health, which is particularly important as you get older. If you’re 65 or over, you can get your comprehensive eye exam at no cost to you with provincial health care.
Some eye conditions, like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, can develop with age. Even if your vision seems fine, not all eye conditions have noticeable symptoms until they’ve progressed significantly.
But with regular eye exams, optometrists can check for the signs of conditions like these, before they have an impact on your vision. Because the earlier they’re spotted, the better the chances of them being treated.
One of the ways your optometrist will look for early signs is with an optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan. This is an advanced eye health scan that creates a 3D image of the eye and its important structures, like the optic nerve, retina and macula. OCT scans are always included in your standard eye exam at no extra cost to you.
